Contactless payments arrive on more Local Link services

Contactless payments continue to roll out across Ireland's public transport network, with TFI Local Link Kildare South Dublin becoming the latest service to introduce tap-and-go payment options.

Passengers can now pay single fares using contactless bank cards or mobile wallets such as Apple Pay and Google Pay, removing the need for cash on many journeys.

The latest rollout forms part of the National Transport Authority's wider Next Generation Ticketing (NGT) programme, a major project that aims to modernise fare payment systems across Ireland. The programme will eventually allow passengers to pay for journeys using bank cards, smartphones, smartwatches and other smart devices, while also introducing a new account-based ticketing system that automatically calculates fares.

The first phase of the rollout began in late 2025 when contactless payments were introduced on TFI Local Link services in Tipperary. Since then, additional Local Link offices have joined the programme, with Kildare South Dublin becoming the latest area to receive the technology.

While contactless payments are becoming increasingly common on Local Link services, passengers using Dublin Bus, Luas, DART and commuter rail services will have to wait a little longer. According to the NTA's latest timeline, contactless payments are expected to become available on Luas and Dublin Bus services in 2028, followed by DART and commuter rail services later that year.

The NGT programme represents one of the largest upgrades ever undertaken to Ireland's public transport ticketing infrastructure. It involves the installation of thousands of new validators across buses, Luas stops and rail stations, alongside the replacement of existing ticketing technology that has been in place for more than a decade.

The new system is designed to make public transport easier and more convenient to use, reducing the need for passengers to top up cards in advance while supporting faster boarding and more flexible fare options.

According to the NTA, contactless payments are expected to be available across all TFI Local Link offices by the end of 2026. Existing payment options, including Leap Cards, Free Travel Passes and discounted fare products, will continue to be supported alongside the new system during the transition period.
