Legal challenge lodged against MetroLink approval

A judicial review has been launched against An Coimisiún Pleanála’s approval of the MetroLink Railway Order, with twenty applicants listed in the court filing. The case is scheduled to be heard on Monday.

Those involved live close to the planned Charlemont terminus and have previously warned that placing a major interchange there will bring significant construction impacts, long-term disruption and possible damage to nearby older homes. They have also questioned whether available compensation would cover any repairs required.

Transport Infrastructure Ireland (TII) says it recognises the scale of disruption the Charlemont works will cause and has held numerous meetings with local residents.

The challenge comes shortly after the project received planning approval and as TII moves MetroLink to tender. The 18.8km line — stretching from Swords to Charlemont and serving Dublin Airport, Ballymun, DCU and the city centre — is the largest infrastructure scheme in the State.

Earlier estimates suggested completion in the mid-2030s if unimpeded, but a judicial review could extend that timeline.
