An Coimisiún Pleanála has granted a Railway Order for the Luas Finglas extension, marking a major step forward for the project. The application was submitted by Transport Infrastructure Ireland (TII) and the National Transport Authority (NTA) in November 2024.
The plan will see the Green Line extended by around 4 kilometres from Broombridge to Charlestown, providing new tram connections for residents in the north-west of the city.
Key features of the approved scheme include:
four new stops: St Helena’s, Finglas Village, St Margaret’s Road and Charlestown
a 350-space park-and-ride facility near St Margaret’s Road
approximately 3 km of new walking and cycling paths
a largely off-road route separated from general traffic for faster, more reliable journeys.
By 2035, the extension is expected to add 1.3 million extra public-transport trips per year, increasing to 1.8 million by 2050.
Minister for Transport Darragh O’Brien described the approval as “a major milestone in expanding Dublin’s public transport network.” TII and the NTA said the decision brings the project closer to the construction phase.
